OSI model is a seven layer reference model. Actually, OSI model can be likened to a small size structure that is a product of thoughtful imagination. This structure serves to guide us to interconnect Computers.
We can say that the OSI model serves to interconnect Computer Systems that are yet open. The modelling work is in the form of seven layers.
The activities mentioned in the layers help us to construct Networks. These Networks could be formed simply.
The action-oriented beautiful composition of each layer is valuable. This valuable composition of each layer forms the basis of Protocol(s) development for the layer under consideration.
The OSI model is treated as a standard work. This excellent piece of work is a great gift to interconnect Computer systems. These Computer Systems lying open ( unconnected) can help more if interconnected.
It can be said that OSI cannot be thought to be only a model structure for interconnection. It also serves the purpose of Network users. The user interface that results as a follow up of the OSI model is a friendly one. So, OSI model is a blessing as it easily allows one to get connected to a Network.
The seven layers of the OSI model give us the details of interconnection related matters. The interconnection related matters listed in each layer help to design Protocols for the layer.
It cannot be said that there exists a specific Protocol for activities mentioned in a layer. It is possible that for a particular layer there are multiple Protocols.
The top four layers specify the activities in general terms. These layers are important. They do the homework for the communication process. Yes, these layers extend their valuable help and guidance. The names of these layers are:
Application/User Layer
Presentation Control Layer
Session Control Layer
Transport Layer
The three layers that are downwards are closely linked to the actual transfer of data using communication media. These layers that lie downwards deal with either connection-oriented or connectionless transfer of data. These layers are:
Network Control Layer
Data Link Layer
Physical Link Layer
